Weekend Adventurers 

Weekend Adventurers provides children with the opportunity to explore the wild spaces of Gibbons Park to build their confidence, comfort, and connection in the outdoors.  Instructors will provide open-ended play-based opportunities along with structured activities, as well as wilderness skills and crafts.

Ages 7-11

Saturdays 10AM – 1PM  October 21 & 28, November 4, 11
Cost: $160
Staff: Nina Sampson & Bizz Varty

Participants will: 

  • Increase their skills around decision making, including increased risk-assessment and risk-taking skills, which leads to better self-regulation and improved mental health. 
  • Increase their confidence 
  • Improve their advanced gross motor skills through activities such as walking and climbing
  • Increase their time and opportunities to engage in imaginative play; and
  • Engage their curiosity and wonder

Maximum enrolment: 12 students

Meet at the Gibbons Park West Parking lot (at the west end of Victoria St, next to the Montessori school). 

Dress warmly in layers – we’re going no matter the weather! See here for more information on attire.

Bring water, lunch and snacks – outdoor play is hungry work and we recommend lots of protein! We’ll eat lunch together in the last hour of the program.

Please Note: the public washrooms at Gibbons Park are closed from approximately November until May.

About the Educators

Nina Sampson (she/her) is the Executive Director and lead educator at Forest City Nature Experience. Nina grew up in London and loves exploring the wild spaces the city has to offer. She is a certified Forest and Nature School Practitioner and is a certified teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers. 

Elizabeth “Bizz” Varty (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Centre of Movement Arts. Bizz has a passion for movement and is invested in building and maintaining strong, capable bodies designed to move through natural spaces. Sustainable and accessible movement for all bodies is her jam.
